Draft of an Answer

What would you like?

(asks the waitress, the guidance counselor or academic dean, the parents, the lover, the sheet of paper, the paused feet, and the self in front of every counter tall enough to lean on)

i. I WOULD LIKE TO ORDER A MANUAL ON THE PERVERSION OF BEAUTY

What platform shall we stand upon to depart
from the dark between stars,
so that we arrive
at the break of cheap ink:
this week's horoscopes, here,

penultimate page?

Perhaps you always
start from the
                        back
of magazines.

With a slight stumble of the writing hand,
                        Astronomy
lost its jacket
took a fever
felt the bottle slip
turned the corner
tripped into dreams
embraced a stranger
gave its name in a slur
re sembling
                        Astrology

Are these city lights
one faint point
in somewhere else's constellation?

ii. SHE WOULD LIKE A PAIR OF SCISSORS

Maybe if I wrote with a blade
in each fist--
but paper bears its wounds silent, dry.

iii. WE WOULD LIKE TO BE MISUNDERSTOOD

until the sky darkens
and we drop everything in the grass
to come back inside
for soup or a story or
in any case something
warm.
