One Gun and A Church

“Because there is no such thing as flight. Only that

indeterminate period before a man falls.”

                    - W. Todd Kaneko

40

words per minute is the average typed speed.

Much slower than a bullet as it exits the barrel of a gun.

200

        wingbeats per second. The average

        North-American Hummingbird speed.

3

        lives that could’ve been saved.

Lives that would’ve been saved if

2

wings on an angel’s back or maybe

your back or maybe the man behind

        the gun’s back.

2

people. One in front, one behind.

But a gun doesn’t care about the positioning of the people

around it, just that it gets its fix and this Sunday

3

bodies were in it’s effective firing range. Maybe

on their way to get coffee or go to church but now

200

hearts in that church will be grieving

the loss of those bodies for

40

days. Just as Jesus was in the desert where

        the vast majority of hummingbirds

        are not.
